There is no doubt that the use of emoji attracts the reader’s attention. The question is no longer whether to use them in the text, but how important they are and how to use them.

The term emoji comes from Japanese, e-picture and moji-nature. The fundamental difference from emoticons is that they express human emotions while emoji symbolize everything else. The purpose of using them is to give the text the right tone. It is actually a guide for readers, how they should read the text. It gives them emotional cues, color it and make it more interesting.

Why use them

The advantage is that everyone understands them. They help to prevent the other party from reading the message in a negative way, for example. There are many opinions about emoji, however, they differ. It is obvious that the older generations use them less, even in ordinary communication, compared to the younger generations. They can increase both open rate and click rate. But it can also be harmful. Therefore, use them with caution!

“Emoji can evoke a sense of urgency that is essential for time limited offers.”

Where to place them

If you want your email to stand out from the crowd, an interesting emoji can be a good option. Just make sure the emoji matches the subject matter. In today’s crowded inboxes, it is necessary to set yourself apart from the rest.

In the body of an email, emoji are used to highlight some information or links. Especially if the text is longer, using them will help you separate it and make the whole message easier to read. You can also use them at the end of the email to easily get feedback. 😊 😐 🙁

What to watch out for

A few tips to avoid using emoji incorrectly. As well as tips to get the desired effect you need from the emoji.

Emoji and the effect on spam score

For example, at Seznam.cz, the use of emoji in the subject has a slightly negative effect on the overall spam score mailing. The same is true for other mailbox providers. Therefore, approach emoji sensibly and do not use them too often.

Stand out

The use of emoji in the subject is not new. Therefore, be creative and choose the least used. Remember that emoji complements your text, so it should be related to its meaning. For example:

For example:

  • What about you and the paddleboard? 🏄☀️ || It’s great fun on the water with family or friends … (inSPORTline.cz)
  • Get a 10% discount 🐰 (iwant.cz)
  • Refresh yourself with homemade lemonade, get ready for the summer heat pat (patro.cz)
  • Discover tourist attractions 🎡 (Booking.com)●   V1 – Collaboration In a Hybrid Work World 🏠 ↔️ 💼 (Miro.com)

Different views

Check how individual emoji appear to you. Different devices display them differently. It depends on the user interface, browsers, operating systems and applications. You can use emojipedia, for example, to check.

Do not replace

Avoid substituting words. This is where misunderstandings arise. In addition, if you use emoji that are not currently supported on your device or browser, there will be an empty square and the context may be lost.

Everything in moderation

Use yes, but how much is too much? Do not over use, there is no need to “put” emoji for each sentence, also do not to “put” several next to each other. If one complements or emphasizes the importance of the other, that’s fine, but five in a row is too much.

When it is appropriate

It is necessary to take into account the target group, and segment the audience. Customize, in addition to the text, the individual emoji. They should go hand in hand with meaning. Distinguish between the importance and seriousness of the report. Be careful the dancing figure is not suitable for every e-mail or report.

Beware of double meanings

The hidden meanings of eggplants and peaches, probably doesn’t even need to be mentioned. Emoji are not always used unambiguously, in which case think twice about using them.

Test and then double check your test.

If you’re not sure if your customers are responding to emoji in items, A / B testing is the most reliable tool. In general, it can have a very positive effect on your opening rate results. The tested subject is already tested by the (randomly selected) customers themselves.

“I recommend testing A / B for at least four hours. The longer the time between, i.e. the      testing itself from the submitted result, the more relevant its result. I recommend using them wisely and sparingly, especially in the Czech market. For example, seznam.cz includes them in its algorithm for evaluating spam scores, “said Romana Kristenová, an e-mail specialist at Targito.

Before or after the dot

As far as grammar is concerned, there is no single rule. You can use emoji before or after punctuation. It depends on the context, whether you want them to attract attention, stimulate emotions or complete meaning. If they are a part of a sentence, they are usually placed before punctuation. If it completes the whole paragraph, use them after it. Always with gaps.

Working with emoji can be fun for you and your customers, and we wish you only positive feedback on your emoji communication 😉.
